Jim Daley will not return to Saskatchewan Roughriders coaching staff

Jan 14, 2011 | 3:51 PM

Roughrider fans got their wish.

Special teams co-ordinator Jim Daley will not return to the coaching staff in 2011.

Daley and defensive backs coach Nelson Martin have been told by new Riders head coach Greg Marshall they will not be members of his staff.

Daley came to the Riders before the 2010 season to take over for special-teams when current Eskimos head coach Kavis Reed left for Winnipeg. Special teams became the sore spot for team as they allowed numerous big plays, while being able to create big plays themselves.

Nelson Martin leaves the team after two years as the defensive backs coach and can be credited with James Patrick's development at the safety position (the two pictured below). Patrick led the league in interceptions in just his second year as the Riders safety.

With rumours that Richie Hall will return as the defensive co-ordinator, it is likely Hall will also take over the role of DB's coach.

As for who will replace Daley as special teams coach, rumours have spread that former Tiger-Cats coach Steve Buratto may head West.

There are a few special teams co-ordinators looking for work as well.

Eskimos Noel Thorpe and Hamilton's Dave Easley were both released from their respective teams this off-season.
