The accolades keep coming for Today’s Country 900 CKBI for its continuous coverage of the massive power outage last June that put Prince Albert and the surrounding area in the dark.

Big Blackout of 2012 won the Byron MacGregor award for best small market news cast in all of Canada at the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) national awards gala in Toronto on Saturday.

“It was an honor to accept the award on behalf of Rawlco Radio and the entire team in Prince Albert,” said Brent Bosker, news director.

“During those 30 some hours on the air, we became the conduit of information for the community. I’m very proud of that.”

In April the broadcaster was recognized by the RTDNA with the Prairie regional award. The four regional winners moved on to the finals with CKBI prevailing.

“The judging process is pretty much anonymous. There is a separate committee that takes care of the judging and awards process so its arms length. I think tonight is an indication of the prestige and integrity of the awards process,” said Ian Koenigsfest, RTDNA president.

When selecting the winners, Koesnigsfest said the judges use a variety of criteria to guide their decisions.

“Everyone spoke about teamwork this evening, but I think you’re looking for something out of the ordinary, something that makes a connection with its listeners or viewers. A newscast that not only the team behind it but the client of it which would say ‘that really was fantastic.’”

The voice behind CKBI’s award-winning newscast was the station’s assistant news director and morning anchor Nigel Maxwell.

“Certainly, it takes a team to gather all that content, but Nigel was the one who packaged it and delivered it to the listener. For that reason he deserves a lot of the credit,” Bosker said.

The Association of Electronic Journalists annually honors the best programs, stations and news gathering organizations in radio, television and digital mediums.
