City proclaims Relay for Life Week in PA

May 23, 2013 | 6:10 AM

With the swipe of a pen, Mayor Greg Dionne has proclaimed the week of June 1 Relay for Life Week.

Lyle Karasiuk, chair of the Relay for Life committee said it feels “absolutely wonderful” to have the recognition from the city.

“I thank Mayor Dionne and council for proclaiming the week leading into Relay for Life, as Relay for Life Week here in the City of Prince Albert,” he said.

“The biggest single benefit is of course that it give us that support from city council and we thank them very much, but it also educates the public that this great big event is happening in our community and they should get involved and get out and support it whatever way they can.”

The 12-hour relay is “the biggest single fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society within Saskatchewan” and this year it will begin Friday, June 7 at 7 p.m.

“It revolves around three predominant themes. One theme of course is to celebrate and one we celebrate our survivors at relay. Those are the people who are battling cancer now or who have fought the battle and one. And certainly we remember and those are the people who have, for whatever those reasons, have not been able to survive the battle against cancer,” Karasiuk said.

“And three is to fight back and we challenge folks to fight back doing whatever they can.”

The Relay for Life is still looking for participants, volunteers and survivors for those who wish to get involved.
