Youth group uses art gala to raise money

The teens at the Prince Albert Alliance Church Youth Group are working hard to raise money to build a well in Niger, located in Africa.

One of the most recent fundraisers is an art gala at the Mann Art Gallery, which ran Monday and Tuesday night, offering paintings by local young artists in a silent auction.

“More than 50 percent of the paintings are from local youth,” said Mason Neufeld, who helmed the planning of this event. “Some of them are from adults that also wanted to donate, so the only restriction is all local artists.”

Neufeld said the opening bids started at $20 for the silent auction. The bid winners will be announced during the week.

She said they were hoping to raise $15,000 over the various events to help build the well in Africa.

“We’re raising $15,000 and this is just one in a series of fundraisers,” said Neufeld.

The youth group has partnered with World Vision to help build the well in a community in Niger.

“The reason why we wanted to pick it was in Africa people have to walk nearly six kilometres three times a day to get water,” said Neufeld. “So as soon as they get clean fresh water, they’ll be able to focus on an education and time for themselves.”

Neufeld said they are hoping to have all the funds raised to build the well this summer.
