Community grows frustrated over highway closure

May 7, 2013 | 4:50 PM

Residents of St. Louis are very concerned about the status of Highway 2 south. A section of the well-used highway has been closed since late last week, due to flooding.

The mayor's phone has been ringing off the hook over the past few days.

“We definitely hope that they get it open because we have local businesses out here that are going to feel the pinch if people are afraid to come out this way,” said Les Rancourt.

The water is 24 to 27 inches deep across the highway in some spots.

“The option that they are looking at is of course pumping it out but the closest place they can pump it is about 2.5 miles away, so that presents its own challenges for sure,” said Rancourt.

In the interim, traffic is being detoured on to Highway 25. Some people, who are more familiar with the area, are using the back roads that run through the rural municipality.

Either way, the trip time into Prince Albert from St Louis has been nearly doubled. Rancourt said he is just hoping the problem is resolved soon.

“They didn't offer a timeline. I'm guessing they are probably just hoping the weather warms, because I don’t know where the water is going to go,” he said.
