Machete attack suspect remains at large

The Prince Albert Police Service has released more details about an unprovoked machete attack that occurred in the city’s east end at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.

A 25-year-old man was slashed with a 14 inch machete after being confronted in the hallway of an apartment in the 1400 block of Ninth Street East.

Sgt. Kelly McLean of the Prince Albert Police Service said the victim was treated at Victoria Hospital and released later that day. “It was a gash to his leg, to his knee area. It was about four inches long and needed to be closed by suture,” said McLean.

According to the victim, the two men met in the hallway of the building. The suspect then pulled a 14-inch machete out of a sheath hidden up his sleeve. The suspect slashed the victim once and then fled the scene.

“It’s concerning to know that we have individuals that are armed with machetes up their sleeve as they’re walking around the city at two o’clock on a Saturday afternoon,” said McLean.

Police canvassed the area, including residents of the building, neighbours, and pedestrians but no one reported knowing or seeing the attacker. “None of the residents of the building could pinpoint anybody that matched that description,” said McLean.

A K-9 unit was deployed to the building but was unsuccessful. “It’s difficult for K-9 to make a track when there’s that much pedestrian traffic in the area,” he said.

Cases of random violence are extremely rare in Prince Albert, said McLean. “Usually there’s some underlying reason but at this point in the investigation we can’t find any reason for this unprovoked attack,” he said.

Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the individual. He is described as being five foot nine or five foot ten and about 200 pounds with a husky build. He has a slim face with large eyes and hair curly black hair at the back. He was wearing a white sweater and black pants at the time of the attack.

If you have any information about the incident you are asked to contact Prince Albert police at (306) 953-4222 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
