Maple Creek residents surprised by man’s voyeurism charges

Apr 15, 2013 | 4:33 PM

People in Maple Creek say residents are shocked after a man was arrested and charged last week on voyeurism charges.

On Friday, RCMP charged 72-year-old Walter Wenaas after video cameras were allegedly found in the change room of the town's only gym. According to police, computers and tapes were also found at the gym and a nearby house.

It's rare for big news like this to happen in the small southwestern community, so when it does it certainly sends shock waves throughout the area.

“People are just kind of shocked that this would happen in a small town,” said Marcia Love with the Maple Creek News.

While she hasn't talked specifically to anyone who may have been in the change room that is said to have the cameras, she says all over town people are very surprised.

Mayor Barry Rudd is echoing those thoughts. He says obviously everyone knew there were cameras in parts of the gym, but not in the change room, as the gym was open to card holders 24 hours a day.

Despite all of this, he's not jumping to conclusions about the cameras.

“We have confidence in the RCMP that that will come out in the investigation for sure,” he said.

Rudd admits it's definitely not something they want to see in their community, and it does give them a bit of a black eye.

“Maple Creek is a friendly place,” he said. “It's not something that happens, but stuff happens, I guess.”

Rudd says he knows Wenaas, as do many in town, which definitely adds to their surprise.

“Everyone knows everybody in this town. It's a town of 2,500 people.”
