Saskatchewan Association of Watersheds wants more flooding and drought prevention from the province

The Saskatchewan Association of Watersheds would like to see more preventative measures when it comes to managing the province’s water.

SAW’s acting chair David Sloan said assistance from the provincial government is needed.

“Because they’ve been adamant about the need to reduce the flooding, we need to be prepared for drought situations and we need to protect our water sources,” Sloan said.

He said right now in urban centres that’ll happen whether residents want it to or not. In rural areas he said people need to be conscious of protecting their water source through a well or dugout, to make sure water doesn’t get contaminated.

“As far as preparing for the spring runoff, there aren’t a lot of things an individual can do.”

Sloan wants to see the government work to reduce the amount of wide-open runways to slow the water down. He also said ensuring runways are sloped correctly so they don’t erode and making sure there is grassing on the waterways are important to consider.

“In the long term, spending money in the next few years doing those smaller things makes a big difference,” he said.
