Heavy snow claims Zenon Park community rink

Feb 26, 2013 | 4:25 PM

The small community of Zenon Park is now down one curling rink.

A large section of the roof collapsed Monday afternoon under the weight of the snow and ice. Nobody was inside the building at the time.

“The building was unoccupied and unused because there were some issues with the structure to begin with,” said Mayor Gilbert Ferre.

The rink had actually been closed for the past year.

“We don't have an awful lot of people curling these days. We realize it would be nice to have a building that adds to the community, but at the same time, at what cost,” he said.

The community is now left with the question: Where to go now?

Gilbert said there are three options the community will consider.

“One is to dismantle the building and do nothing. Next one is to rebuild on the same site, and the third one will be to rebuild new but attach it to the hockey rink that was built in the 80s.”

Ferre said the cost to simply the repair damage does not make sense.
