A Weldon man accused of causing an automobile collision in Prince Albert which killed an expectant mother won’t face punishment for a previous crime.

Craig Curtis Kopichanski, 21, was in Prince Albert Provincial Court Friday to face charges stemming from the Jan. 23 fatal collision that led to the death of 30-year-old Chrystal Rivet. Instead, the appearance dealt with a previous charge stemming from a June 2012 theft at AG World in Melfort.

Kopichanski had been ordered to pay $1,500 restitution to the business, but in court it was revealed he had only paid back $300 before last month’s collision.

The judge said Kopichanski could have faced jail for not making the payments, but he ended up accepting a joint submission from defense and crown counsels to terminate the conditional sentence order.

Kopichanski was remanded in custody until Feb. 19. He is currently charged with impaired driving causing death, impaired driving causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing death, dangerous driving causing bodily harm and failure to stop causing death and bodily harm.
