$99.9 Million in building permits in 2012

In 2012, the number of building permits may have decreased from 2011, but the value of those permits are much higher.

In 2011, the City issued 386 permits, valued at $76.8 million, while in 2012 the numbers of permits fell to 289.

Even though the number of building permits dropped by nearly 100, the value of those permits was $99.9 million.

Chief building official for the City Kim Johnson said, “In terms, 2011 we did a large number of permits but a lot of them were small accessory builds like a shed, a garage, a small little addition type thing. 2012 in terms of construction there were a lot more larger projects as opposed to smaller ones. We didn’t see so many of the garages and sheds, more of the commercial, industrial, full house kinds of things.”

Johnson said they never know what people will be building, so they never know what kind of building permits will be coming through City Hall.

“I think it sort of comes and goes. Basically people will build their primary buildings and that in one run because it’s their main project. Then the next year, or so, they come in and do the bits and pieces work that they need to get done,” Johnson said.

His outlook for 2013 is that it will continue along the same trend that’s been seen over the last few years — steady growth and no real drop in numbers.

He said it fluctuates between residential and commercial permits and that the City continues to be busy.
