Christmas multicultural potluck circles the globe

Dec 15, 2012 | 2:45 PM

Merry Christmas, Joyeux Noël, Sung Tan Chuk Ha, Happy Hanukkah and Feliz Navidad are only a few ways to say a season’s greetings.

At the Prince Albert Multicultural Council on Saturday there were several cultures gathered to celebrate the season and wish blessings while sharing a potluck.

Although the feast was entitled Christmas Potluck Dinner, Shayne Lazarowich executive director for the Multicultural Council said the event was more of a holiday potluck because it’s geared towards people of all cultures and religions.

“It’s nice because a lot of people (are here) representing a lot of parts of the world,” Lazarowich said.
“Food from their culture; that’s the idea.”

Lazarowich said usually this event sees anywhere from 50 to 100 people crunch down on delectable dishes from across the world and today was no different. Only 15 minutes into the dinner and there was already around 60 people packed into the room.

A long table stood packed with yams, Asian fried rice, noodles, ham, lasagna and enough desserts to feed an army.

Also in attendance were members of the YWCA’s Newcomer Society who were co-hosts of the potluck.

Sean McCall, assistant manager of the regional group said the YWCA hosted the event the PAMC because they share a lot of the same clients and often work together on projects.

“We thought it was a good opportunity to continue the collaboration,” McCall said.

He explained this potluck not only help people who are new to the country meet those from their own culture, but from other cultures who are sharing the same experience.

“This is a great thing,”

The dinner began with Lazarowich saying a few words of greetings as well as blessings from the crowd in their own language.

Among them were a few faces from council including Councillors Don Cody and Lee Atkinson and former mayor Jim Scarrow.

The sentiment of the room was said concisely from a man in the crowd before everyone indulged in dishes.

“We celebrate together.”
