B.C. Lions hand Roughriders their fourth straight loss

Aug 20, 2012 | 7:41 AM

The Saskatchewan Roughriders losing streak was extended to four games by the B.C. Lions on Sunday.

The Riders lost 24-5 and Darian Durant was pulled late in the fourth quarter after his third interception of the game.

Saskatchewan was the first on the board with a field goal in the first quarter. However, the B.C. Lions methodically wore down the Riders and scored 24 unanswered points.

The Lions first touchdown came in the second quarter after Sandro DeAngelis missed a 48-yard field goal, Tim Brown returned it to the Riders 49-yard line and a 15-yard penalty had the Lions at the 34. Travis Lulay would finish the drive with a five-yard touchdown run to make it 7-3 at halftime.

The Lions pulled away late in the third quarter after the Riders defense started to break down. Travis Lulay found Arland Bruce III on back to back plays, the first was a 28-yard game to midfield. The next was a 55-yard touchdown to Bruce and the game was 17-3 and the pressure was on the Riders to answer.

On the next possession the Riders moved the ball but the Lions stuffed a third and one at the B.C. 45-yard line to create yet another turnover.

The Lions answered back with a touchdown that put the game out of reach. Ernest Jackson ran in untouched on a 15-yard sweep.

The Riders only other points came late in the game when the Lions conceded a safety with under a minute left.

Saskatchewan's backup quarterback Drew Willy came into the game for the last two drives and was six for seven for 54-yards, albeit with the Lions playing soft zone coverage.

The Riders fall to a 3-4 record and in a tie for third in the West with the Calgary Stampeders. Those two teams go head to head this coming Saturday at Mosaic Stadium.

The B.C. Lions are now alone in first in the CFL with a 5-2 record.
