Lockdown continues at the Pen

Jul 18, 2012 | 11:00 AM

The Saskatchewan Penitentiary in Prince Albert remains under lockdown today after a fight on Monday night in the medium security wing of the prison.

Seven inmates were injured in the brawl that started in a common area during exercise period. Two needed treatment in hospital.

At this point the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) doesn't know what sparked the disturbance.

“When something like this occurs when you have multiple victims and multiple perpetrators the investigation is really complicated so our security intelligence officers are working with RCMP to determine what occurred,” said spokesman Darcy Begrand

The lockdown is necessary, Begrand said to ensure the safety of both the inmates and guards.

“We need to be sure that there will be no additional assaults, no repercussions, no retaliations,” Begrand said.

“So once we determine that everything is safe to return to normal routine we will do that.”

As of 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Begrand said CSC and RCMP officers were still conducting a search of the prison.

He said it was possible the lockdown would remain in effect for the rest of the week.

Visits to the medium security inmates remain suspended until further notice.
