Saskatchewan breaks energy use record

Saskatchewan is using record levels of natural gas.

From 9 a.m. Tuesday until 9 a.m. Wednesday, Saskatchewan residents cranked up the thermostat more than ever before.

Dave Burdeniuk with SaskEnergy says the province has set a new record.

“The new record is 1.13 petajoules. It’s one per cent greater than the previous record that was set in January of 2004,” he said.

Burdeniuk adds it's not just the cold weather causing the increase.

“We have about 30,000 more customers today than we had in 2004,” he said.

Burdeniuk points out that the average home is actually using less natural gas, thanks to efficient appliances and home renovations.

Ten years ago, the average home used 130 gigajoules of energy for furnace and water heating. That number is now down to 109.
