Saskatchewan Roughriders will finish without Darian Durant

Oct 25, 2011 | 5:19 PM

Saskatchewan Roughriders' Darian Durant will watch the rest of the team's season from the sidelines.

“I'm out,” proclaimed the quarterback after Tuesday's practice.

“It gives Coach a chance to evaluate Cole (Bergquist) and Ryan (Dinwiddie). It gives other guys a chance to get in and show what they can do.”

Durant admits he's suffering from other injuries that haven't been reported but would not divulge what those injuries were.

The 29 year old says he had a lengthy meeting with Miller about whether he should take any more snaps this season.

“You only get two more shots at this thing in 2011. You want to enjoy every moment so that made me a little reluctant to agree (to shut it down). The more you sit down and think about it. The more you watch that hit that I took out in Calgary, we don't want anything like that to happen again.”

Head Coach Ken Miller would not address whether or not the quarterback had taken or passed any post-concussion tests after the hit Durant took during Friday's loss in Calgary.

Dinwiddie starts

Backup quarterback Ryan Dinwiddie will start on Saturday when the Roughriders take on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Mosaic Stadium.

Dinwiddie admits he has something to prove after throwing three interceptions in the first half against Edmonton on Oct. 10.

“Obviously my last start didn't go the way I wanted it to. I thought we moved the ball on them, you just can't turn the ball over when we have a chance to kick a field goal or something like that.”

Dinwiddie has been around the CFL long enough to know these last two games could mean the difference between having a job next season and not.

“I'm playing for my job every day I come out here. I know this is professional football and your job is always on the line. So I come out here always with the thought process that my job is always on the line.”

The people's choice

After the news broke that Ryan Dinwiddie would start on Saturday, fans on twitter were quick to criticize. They would prefer third-string quarterback Cole Bergquist get the shot.

The University of Montana star knows he's in a favourable position when it comes to fan support.

“The back-up quarterback is always the favourite player on the team because he can't screw up. It's nice to have some fan support for the first time since I've been out here.”

Bergquist is chomping at the bit to get more than the two short yardage snaps he's received in his career.

“They're going to see a guy selling out. I can't guarantee what my stats are going to be or whether we're going to win but this is my Grey Cup if I get in. This will be one of the biggest games I've played in in my life so I'll be out there selling out.”
