Golden Bears lose to Hague 66-14, back at it Monday against Birch Hills

The Prince Albert Golden Bears were up against it Thursday, facing off against the always tough Hague Panthers and lost 66-14 on their home turf.

Not only that, but knowing they had to play again on Monday against Birch Hills was at the back of their minds as well.

“It’s one of those things where we knew this would be a tough one,” said Troy Semenchuk, Golden Bears assistant coach. “We know we have close games back-to-back again and we had some success against Birch Hills. We’ll take this for what it was, a learning experience and work on the basics, blocking and tackling.

“We’re giving the boys the day off (Friday) to let them heal up some bumps and bruises but we’ll come back Monday with good attitudes.”

Good attitudes are something the Golden Bears have shown throughout the season. Regardless of the score, they never get overly frustrated or take undisciplined penalties, which as Semenchuk said, isn’t always an easy thing to do.

“The kids have handled this real well all year, they’re very classy and show a lot of maturity which isn’t always easy to do in a lopsided game like that,” said Semenchuk. “We’re proud of them, we’ll keep plugging away and do our best.”

There were some positives as Landon Lajuenesse ran in an end-around for a 99 yard touchdown line Alex Ugarkovic found the end zone for his first time.

One of the biggest improvements Semenchuk and the rest of the staff has seen is how well the team has gelled together as the season’s gone on, and welcomed the players commuting from St. Louis.

“We have guys from PACI and St. Louis and it’s not like they’re together in the school all day,” said Semenchuk. “They’ve really come together and go to know together and trust each other.

“It’s nice that they work together, it’s not like we can practice or meet at noon because we just don’t have our whole team here. They work hard together after school and that’s fantastic to see.”

The Golden Bears will play the Birch Hills Marauders Monday at PACI. In their last meeting, the Golden Bears beat the Marauders 45-32, in what was the Marauders first game in about 26 years.
