Lump sums pensions concern veterans

Liberal Veterans Affairs Critic Kirsty Duncan stopped in Saskatoon Wednesday as part of her cross-Canada tour.

Duncan says many veterans also have concerns about a new lump sum payment given to wounded soldiers instead of guaranteed pensions.

Duncan feels the new system falls short of what veterans need.

“They want more money for the veterans,” Duncan told reporters.

“These are people who put their life on the line for Canada and we have to make sure they are looked after when they come home.”

World War II veteran Red Williams agrees with Duncan that the new system is inadequate.

“If you’re healthy (when) you come back, fair enough, a little bit on money and off you go. But if you’ve got some long-term disability, you need that kind of care for the rest of your life, not a package of money,” Williams said.

“Us old veterans, we want to see the young fellas treated properly.”
