Braves masters slo-pitch qualifies for nationals

Aug 18, 2011 | 7:34 AM

The Prince Albert Braves slo-pitch team needed to beat the Saskatoon White Sox twice, this past weekend to claim a provincial slo-pitch title and qualify for nationals.

In those two games, the Braves totalled 43 runs to finish first, beating the White Sox 23-8 and 20-19 in extra innings to punch their ticket to the 40+ nationals in Kelowna next year.

“It was a good weekend, our boys played hard and battled our way through it,” said Ron Gunville, team captain.

This isn’t the first time the Braves have been to the nationals, in fact, they won the 1999 Canadian Senior B title. Also in the Braves trophy cases are the 2000 Provincial Senior A title and several medals at the Western Canadian stage.

The team’s success has a lot to do with how tightly knit the group has been over a long period of time, Gunville said.

“We’ve been together for close to 20 years. The strength of our team, we played good together, we’ve been together for a long time,” said Gunville.

“We all get along together as a group, we still hit the ball well and our defence was top-notch over the weekend.”

This will be their first nationals appearance in the masters 40+ division. The Braves were close to qualifying for the nationals last year as they finished second in masters provincials.

Gunville hopes the team can raise money to fund their trip to Kelowna.
