Health officials warn of romaine lettuce E.coli outbreak

Health officials in Canada are warning people about a new E. coli outbreak linked to romaine lettuce.

So far the outbreak has made 15 people sick in Quebec and three in Ontario — with six requiring hospitalization, officials said.

The public health website is advising people in Ontario and Quebec to avoid eating romaine lettuce and salad mixes containing romaine lettuce until more is known about the outbreak and cause of contamination. Currently, there is no evidence to suggest that people n other parts of Canada are affected by this outbreak.

Canada’s public health agency said the cases were reported between mid-October and early November and those affected were between the ages of five and 93.

The outbreak also stretches into the U.S. where it has affected 32 people in 11 states.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to pinpoint the cause.  Most romaine sold this time of year is grown in California.

The agency noted the strain identified is different than the one linked to romaine earlier this year but appears similar to last year’s outbreak linked to leafy greens.
