Myles Venne senior girls take PAGC gold

Mar 24, 2017 | 12:00 PM

Students within the Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC) communities filed into the Senator Allen Bird Memorial Center this week to shoot some hoops. The Senator Myles Venne Memorial School Huskies won the tournament after a hard fought game against Montreal Lake.

The senior girls have wrapped up their portion of the tournament, with teams in attendance from the Senator Myles Venne Memorial School (SMVMS) in Air Ronge, the Sally Ross School in Hall Lake, and the Senator Allen Bird Memorial School (SABMS) in Montreal Lake.

“I made two threes and I just felt right up in the air,” Myles Venne player Rosette Bird said.

The girls’ final game was played on March 22, with the SMVMS Huskies defeating the SABMS Hawks in a tight game. The score changed hands a number of times, but the lead was never larger than a seven-point margin.

“It was kinda giving me mixed emotions,” Bird said. “When you look at the scoreboard and think ‘oh, they’re gonna win, then you look at the scoreboard again and see we’re gonna win,’ but we just play for the game.”

Eventually the Huskies came out on top with a two point victory over the Hawks, earning them gold medals and the PAGC Basketball banner for the 2017 season.

Bird started playing basketball in 2016. She started watching NBA star Stephen Curry “sinking threes” and felt motivated to start playing the sport.

She said she hoped to be back on the courts next year.

Bob Magee, an education consultant with the PAGC said the organization hosts tournaments for 35 different events for 19 different sports. Basketball is a newer addition, as this is just the tournament’s second year in existence.

“It has sort of died over the years and so we’re trying to bring it back,” Magee said.

He said the schools are starting to develop their basketball programs and skills and they’re having a good time while they’re doing it.

“The girls were really having fun, laughing and giggling, and that’s good to see,” Magee said. “That’s what sports is all about, to enjoy themselves, and to have fun.”
