Top Ten Sun Protection Tips (not by David Letterman)

May 8, 2013 | 10:22 AM

Spring has finally sprung. It’s time to review the Top Ten Sun Protection Tips.

10. Take shade breaks. I’m not suggesting you live in the basement all summer. Do, however, take short breaks from full sunlight. Your collagen will thank you.

9. Use vitamin C serum before bed. Vitamin C promotes collagen production and undoes sun damage.

8. Check your skincare products for glycolic acid or alpha hydroxy acids. If you suspect any of your products have this potent exfoliator, cut back on them. Thinning the skin can cause rebound pigmentation problems.

7. Check your products for retinol. Only use them at night time. Day time can create sun sensitivity.

6. Put green tea serum on before you put on sunscreen. Green tea applied topically is proven to make the UV protection in your sunscreen more potent and effective.

5. Put sunscreen on your neck and upper chest as well as your face. Neck and décolletage can end up looking older than the face as these areas often get no protection at all.

4. Rock the hat look. Find one with a wide brim. Keep shopping until you find one you love.

3. Take a tip from celebrity fashion icons and wear big sunglasses with thick temples. This is done on purpose, to help protect the delicate eye area and reduce crows feet.

2. Less is more. We all appreciate a little of that sun kissed look but no one envies people who look like a catcher’s mitt. Snooki might look cute while her collagen is still in its twenties but trust me, without some intervention, that girl will look like Mickey Rourke when she hits her thirties.

1. And the number one Sun Protection tip – love those freckles. They are beautiful and adorable and dare I say, sexy. Women’s magazines try to sell you goop to get rid of them. Men’s magazines idolize them. Change your magazine subscription!
