Stats Can reports Saskatchewan population increasing at slow pace

Jun 22, 2011 | 5:05 PM

Saskatchewan's population has hit another all-time high.

One million 54 thousand people now call this province home. That's a new all-time high, despite hundreds packing up and moving to Alberta.

Roughly 2,800 people packed up and moved next door during the first three months of 2011. But Michael Fabiyi, with Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp, insists the provincial economy is strong and he's not worried.

“Am I watching it closely? Yes, absolutely, but it doesn't pose any concerns right now because we're still growing,” said Fabiyi.

Fabiyi cautions against reading too much into those numbers. That's because as Saskatchewan was losing hundreds to Alberta, it drew roughly the same amount from provinces like Ontario, Quebec, and Manitoba.

“Saskatchewan, irrespective of Alberta's performance, and irrespective of what's happening next door, we've been able to hold our own, and we continue to attract people by our own right,” said Fabiyi.

Simply put, Fabiyi says the economy is strong in Saskatchewan, is projected to remain that way, and will continue to draw people in from other parts of Canada.
