P.A. curlers pose big threat at provincials

Jan 21, 2019 | 11:00 AM

The best women’s curling teams in the province will face off this week in Humboldt at the Viterra Scotties, and Prince Albert will have some strong representation on the ice.

Kara Thevenot plays for Team Silvernagle, which narrowly lost out in the final the past two years. Thevenot said she hopes for a better result this year.

“When you put yourself in the final, you always have a chance to win and that’s what we are hoping for but it’s a long week and we will just take one game at a time,” she said.

The Silvernagle foursome is coming off a quarter-final loss last weekend at the Meridian Canadian Open, falling 6-1 to Switzerland’s Silvana Tirinzoni. Thevenot said they don’t have any specific strategy this week.

“We’ve been playing a lot this year and playing really well. We put a lot of work into our team and we are kind of just excited to get started so it’s about one rock at a time,” she said.

Also representing Prince Albert this week is Sherry Just who curls out of Saskatoon’s Nutana Curling Club. This year will be Just’s third time to women’s provincials, but her first time as a skip.

“I am feeling really excited about it, it’s a great opportunity,” she said, adding her team’s focus will be on not looking too far ahead in the tournament and focusing on one game at a time.

The finals for the tournament are scheduled for Sunday night. The winner will represent Saskatchewan at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts next month in Sydney, Nova Scotia.
