Sledding safely this winter

Dec 10, 2018 | 9:03 AM

Prince Albert’s Parkland Ambulance is reminding members of the community to ensure their children are using proper safety methods when sledding this winter.

Parkland Ambulance paramedics were called to a sledding accident near Berezowsky School on Dec. 8. Paramedics cared for a 10-year-old boy with injuries, and he was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

This incident prompted Parkland Ambulance to release a series of winter safety tips.

Helmets are critical to almost all winter sports, and sledding is no different. Parkland Ambulance is urging parents to ensure their children are wearing helmets at all times while sledding.

They are also reminding parents to ensure their children are not sledding or playing near any roads, as sleds can lose control and accidentally enter roadways.

Parents are recommended to teach their children to be on the lookout for any other obstructions such as trees or lamp posts before they start sledding, as these objects can cause incident or injury.

It is also important to ensure youth are wearing proper winter clothing at all times to avoid issues such as frost bite. However, it is important to avoid clothing such as long scarves which may become entangled underneath a sled.

Children are also being reminded to wait their turn to go down hills, as crashing into other youths can cause serious injury for both parties.

Parkland would also like to remind parents to inform their children to call 911 if they see someone who has been injured, and to know all of their important medical information and contacts.
