Volunteers working to get produce to northern communities

Oct 26, 2018 | 5:00 PM

Some northern communities will soon get some free produce.

Two Ontario-based organizations, Southwestern Ontario Gleaners and Crossroad Canada partnered with Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation (PBCN) to distribute approximately 45,000 pounds of produce to the northern communities which make up the nation.

“Everything is either oversized or undersized and it’s just not pretty for the stores and so it would be left in the fields to rot, so this is an opportunity to feed the northern community of Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation,” Beverly Hadland of Crossroad Canada said.

Crossroad Canada is a Christian organization that helps with relief and development and operates faith-based broadcasting and media in Canada. Southwestern Ontario Gleaners is an organization aiming to provide produce to people who have difficulty accessing it. The gleaners were responsible for preparing and cleaning the produce.

The food was trucked out from Ontario and arrived in Prince Albert early Friday morning, where volunteers at the Share Building got to work getting the vegetables and greens ready for distribution.

“We break down these skids into 25-pound bags and then pass it out, so we got pears, apples, carrots, onions, peppers, tomatoes, and cucumbers this trip,” Hadland said.

Over 30 volunteers helped with the effort, with some coming from as far as Saskatoon and Southend to offer their help. Local volunteers came from churches along with the PBCN. Hadland said they expect to have a quick turnaround.

“Within a day, we’ll have it all repackaged (and) ready to go tomorrow,” she said. “We’d like to get it a little more often,” she said.
