Dispute over Saskatoon licence plate resolved

A Saskatoon family that refused to back down is getting the response they were hoping for after someone complained to SGI about a personalized licence plate in memory of their dead son.

The crown corporation is now taking the side of the family, but it didn't start out that way.

Greg Picot ordered the plate for his daughter as a gift back in 2006. It reads JGAL06–his son’s initials and the year he died.

However, more than four years later, Picot received a letter in the mail from SGI saying someone had complained the plate read “gigolo sex.”

“They want to take our plates away, and I'm saying no,” stated Picot. “They say well what if we change a letter, and I say that's my son's initials, who do you change? You can't.”

Kelly Brinkworth with SGI says every complaint has to be reviewed, regardless how much of a stretch it may be.

“So in light of the circumstances behind this we don't think sexual connotation is an issue in this case at all and we're reversing that decision,” Brinkworth told News Talk Radio on Monday.

“We apologize for any grief that we caused the family because it certainly wasn't our intention.”

Even so, Picot says the whole ordeal has brought back the pain of losing his son.
