Air Canada, WestJet announce higher luggage fees

Aug 28, 2018 | 1:16 PM

Canada’s two biggest airlines are hiking their fees for checked luggage.

Air Canada and WestJet both announced they’d be raising the price for the first checked bag to $30, up from $25.

Both airlines are also going to raise the price for a second checked bag to $50 from $30.

The fees will be charged to passengers flying in the lowest fare classes on both carriers.

The price increases appear to follow a similar move by U.S. airline JetBlue Airways Corp., which raised fees for checked bags earlier this week.

Air Canada will begin applying the higher fees on flights departing on or after Oct. 5 within Canada, as well as those to and from the U.S., the Caribbean and Mexico.

WestJet’s increases take effect Oct. 1 for domestic flights booked as of last Friday, and as of Tuesday on international flights, including those to and from the U.S.

The increases are the first in four years. Both airlines cited rising costs as the reason behind the moves.
