Man sentenced for incident involving homemade Taser

Aug 28, 2018 | 2:00 PM

A young man pulled over by police last week has pleaded guilty to possession of a prohibited weapon after admitting to having a home-made Taser in his vehicle.

Lonnie Eashappie pleaded guilty this week to two charges in relation to the incident from last Thursday, and was sentenced to three months in jail. Eashappie, 23, was arrested after police stopped him last week in the 1100 block of Branion Drive.

Police were already in the area dealing with a separate incident, but stopped Eashappie after an officer spotted him driving and acting suspiciously. Court heard that Eashappie was trying to conceal his face as he drove past officers.

Once police stopped the vehicle moments later, court heard Eashappie moved into the passenger seat.

Eashappie’s defence lawyer, Estelle Hjertaas said Monday Eashappie was eager to deal with the charges quickly. She said her client received the Taser as a gift from a friend.

“He’s not acknowledging he ever used it, or tested it to determine what it was,” Hjertaas said.

The judge in the case gave Eashappie credit for time he has already spent in custody since last week, leaving him with 90 days left to serve. Eashappie is also prohibited from having any weapons and the Taser was ordered to be forfeited.
