Raiders acquire rights to centre Noah Gregor from Royals

Jul 26, 2018 | 8:00 AM

The Prince Albert Raiders have acquired the rights to Noah Gregor from the Victoria Royals.

Gregor, a 1998-born centre, has signed an entry-level contract with the San Jose Sharks and could potentially play professional this year with the Sharks or a minor league affiliate, but the Raiders now hold his junior rights. The terms of the trade were not released, but General Manager Curtis Hunt said it’s something the team is comfortable with given the potential boost of adding Gregor to the lineup.

“I think it’s a fair price if he comes and meets all the conditions. He’s a real good player obviously, signed with San Jose who believes they have a future with him there. There’s been a little bit of a trend of 20-year-olds coming back to junior, and we certainly thought it was worth the little bit of risk we put out to add him to our list,” said Hunt.

If he were to join the Raiders this season, Hunt admitted Gregor is the type of player that could help push the team over the top.

“If Noah arrives in Prince Albert, it puts us in a real good position to possibly contend for a pennant,” said Hunt. “You look at a guy like [2018 playoff MVP] Glenn Gawdin and what he did as an over-ager in our league, we’re talking the same class of player.”

Gregor, a 6’0”, 188-lb product of Beaumont, Alta. played for the Victoria Royals and Moose Jaw Warriors last season, scoring 29 goals and 36 assists over 60 games. He tallied a further six goals and six assists with the Royals over his 11 playoff games.

The Raiders’ annual general meeting will be held Tuesday, Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. at the Ches Leach Lounge, and is open to all fans with a valid membership.
