P.A. woman named to university All-Star team
Prince Albert’s Kaitlin Willoughby plans to be a serious threat on the ice at Hockey Canada’s Summer Showcase in Calgary next month.
This year marks the third time she has been asked to play for the U-Sports Women’s Hockey All-Star Team, who will play two games against the national women’s development team and two games against Japan’s national team.
“Since last showcase I have been working more on developing a quicker release on my shot and shot accuracy, as I find I get a high percentage of shots per game but would like to see more of those go in the net,” Willoughby said.
Willoughby who is pursuing a nursing degree at the University of Saskatchewan, spent the past five seasons playing for the Huskies. She said she is honoured to play at the showcase.
“It is an opportunity for us to showcase our league’s talent and be involved with Hockey Canada which is something we are all grateful for,” she said.
In addition to being named CIS rookie of the year in 2013-2014, Willoughby also helped Team Canada win a silver medal at the Winter Universiade in Kazakhstan last year. She said it is her dream to one day to play for Team Canada at the Olympics.
“It has always been my dream to be a part of the national program and camps like this give me the opportunity to be watched against the highest caliber of female hockey players in the country,” she said.
The summer showcase runs Aug. 2 to Aug. 11.
