Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation cancels planned byelection

A byelection for the Urban Councillor position in the Peter Ballantyne Cree nation will not go ahead.

A media release sent to paNOW signed by Head Electoral Officer Randy Clarke indicated the band had been served with a federal court notice prohibiting the planned byelection until a hearing is held.

Clarke’s release stated the band was advised by legal counsel to not proceed with the byelection.

The press release also indicated Warren McCallum, whose election as urban councillor was challenged in an appeal, would be reinstated as the urban councillor until further notice.

No date has been provided by the federal courts regarding the hearing. As the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation operates under a so-called “custom” election code, the Department of Indigenous Service of Canada has historically stepped back from involvement in electoral disputes.
