Pine Needle Festival contributes to Little Red park improvements

Jul 3, 2018 | 2:00 PM

After a successful eighth rendition of the Pine Needle Mountain Bike & Music Festival, a sizeable monetary donation was made to Little Red River Park.

The festival has contributed to improvements at the park for the past five years. Funds raised annually have amounted to $30,000 to date. At the Cosmo Lodge Monday, a $10,000 cheque was presented to the city for the festivals 2018 contribution.

“It’s always good to see local event organizers contribute to our community by bringing in visitors and tourists at events like the Pine Needle Festival that showcase the best of Prince Albert,” Mayor Greg Dionne said. “It’s even better when we see them turning around and contributing to the spaces they are using for the benefit of everyone.”

Dionne went on to call Little Red River Park a “jewel” in the city and despite pressure and many people eyeing the park for purchase, he maintained the park will always remain publicly owned and free for residents to use.

Over the years, improvements at the park have included a retaining wall along the river trail in 2014, new fire pits in 2015 and 16, and a water bottle refill station was installed last year. While the funds have yet to be earmarked for a project this year, organizer Mike Horn hinted at a long list of potential endeavours.

“We try to target improvements that are good for all users of the park,” Horn said. “We are working hard with the city to figure out a project for 2018.”

The Pine Needle Mountain Bike & Music Festival attracts attendees from across the province for its mountain bike event. Over 2,000 people took part in this summer.
