Sask. Rivers band students ready to shake the walls at CPAC

May 29, 2018 | 12:00 PM

Final preparations are underway for a massive concert Tuesday night at Carlton Comprehensive High School.

Hundreds of students from grades five through eight will participate in the Saskatchewan Rivers School Division’s Massed Band Concert. Eleven-year-old Courtney Knodel, from Red Wing School, said she was looking forward to playing in the concert.

“It’s cool to play in band, and it’s a good experience,” she said.

Two elementary groups spent Tuesday morning working out the final squeaks and learning how to play with the students from other schools. Perry Acorn, who teaches band at École Vickers Public School, said it’s a great opportunity for all the young musicians to meet other band students from the region.

“They are making friends in their elementary grades, and then when they come here to Carlton they already know all of the kids that are in band,” he said.

Acorn said it can be a challenge getting all the kids organized to play on the same page, but he added all their hard work has paid off.

“They are much better now than they were in September,” he joked.

Interest in the band program has been growing in the Saskatchewan Rivers School Division. There are currently over 1,000 students enrolled in the program, learning to play a range of instruments from the clarinet to the drums and saxophone.

The concert Tuesday night will take place inside Carlton’s Physical Activity Centre, starting at 7 p.m.
