RCMP provide update on sudden death investigation on Ahtahkakoop First Nation

May 12, 2018 | 9:19 AM

Shellbrook RCMP continue to investigate a sudden death on the Ahtahkakoop Frist Nation.

At 10:13 a.m. on May 10, RCMP received and responded to a complaint of a burning vehicle on the First Nation. When police arrived, some fire was still burning in the surrounding bushes. RCMP said they did not search the interior of the vehicle before they left the scene.

Later that day at 4:49 p.m. and 5:01 p.m., Shellbrook RCMP received two calls and began investigating reports of a missing person that was last seen the night before.

Shortly after at 5:30 p.m., the Shellbrook detachment received information there was a burnt-out vehicle on the Ahtahkakoop First Nation that possibly contained human remains. When police arrived, they found this was the same vehicle from earlier in the day and confirmed that human remains were in the vehicle.

The RCMP Major Crime Unit North attended, but due to falling darkness, decided to protect and hold the scene until morning to allow a more thorough examination by the Forensic Identification Section, a traffic reconstructionist, and the provincial coroner and fire scene examiner. The vehicle has been removed and the human remains have been sent to Saskatoon for an autopsy scheduled for early next week, according to RCMP.

Police say it is too early to determine if the human remains belong to the reported missing person until they are identified during the examination.
