$25K donated to five helpful Sask. organizations

Oct 6, 2016 | 6:00 AM

A substantial donation has been made from a regional credit union to five organizations with the mandate of helping and supporting others.

Diamond North Credit Union donated $5,000 to each organization from their People Helping People community investment fund.

The Prince Albert Historical Society, Nipawin and District Services to the Handicapped Inc.,White Fox School community council, Nipawin Pool Building Improvement Committee and Casper Early Learning Co-operative Centre benefitted from the donation.

Hugh MacDonald, managing director of Nipawin and District Services to the Handicapped Inc., said he was “extremely grateful” of the funding.

They’ll use the money for a new wheelchair-accessible van.

MacDonald said a new van was greatly needed because people with disabilities in their community need to travel to bigger cities such as P.A. or Saskatoon for their medical appointments.

Previously they only had a van from 1979 which can only transport one person at a time.

Without a new van, MacDonald said they couldn’t ensure the safety of their passengers, especially during winter.

“It’s really concerning when people leave this community in darkness and get home after dark in poor weather,” he said. “That’s what we ran into last year, and it was really frightful.”

Rebecca Funk, marketing officer with the credit union, said staff and board members narrowed the number of recipients down from 19 to five.

“It’s a really good feeling,” she said of the donation. “We all live and work in these communities, so we really value what happens in them and the projects that go on.”

Funk said the bank allocated this fund in their 10th year to give back to the communities. The theme of the anniversary was “people helping people,” and the five recipients chosen were the ones who showed their willingness to help others.

She said choosing Nipawin and District Services to the Handicapped Inc. was “self-explanatory.”
