Northern students pack their bags for Regina

A great opportunity awaits a group of northern high school students.

Nineteen students are travelling down to Regina this weekend to attend the Youth Mentorship Program. They are coming from Turnor Lake, Stanley Mission, Pinehouse Lake, and Fond du Lac.

“They are really looking forward to it. They think it will be a good experience because they get to spend time at the University of Regina on residence. They get to meet some government people and go on some excursions and have some time to do some shopping too,” said Lori McFadden, a teacher at Father Gamache Memorial School, in Fond du Lac.

McFadden said the students don't go the chance to travel on many trips like this. They were asked to write a letter to the province and explain why their school should attend.

In addition to touring the university, the students will also learn how parliament works by attending question period. They will meet the Lieutenant Governor. They will also learn about careers in government and the public service.

“I would like to thank our partners Cameco Corporation and the Government House Foundation for their support of the Youth Mentorship Program that is such a great educational opportunity for our province's youth,” minister responsible for the Provincial Capital Commission, Bill Hutchinson, said.

The program runs from Sunday to Wednesday.
