Heavy rainfall at the end of July has left many Melfort property owners with a bit of a mess to clean up.

According to Melfort City Clerk Heather Audette, it rained steadily between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m. on July 28.

“Environment Canada recorded 108 mm, which is a little over 4 inches, but in some areas it sounds like some people received 125 mm,” Audette said.

Because of damages caused by that heavy rainfall, the City of Melfort has been approved under the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program (PDAP).

Audette said the program provides help for people who may not be able to get it elsewhere.

“PDAP will cover damage to property that’s not covered by private insurance,” said Audette, “or where that insurance on that property isn’t available at a reasonable cost.”

Audette said 25 property owners had already called in to City Hall about damages, but she expects that number to double.

Most of the damage caused to homes and businesses was caused by overland flooding, but Audette said there were some trees uprooted as well.

“I know of one instance where a tree did fall on a vehicle.”

Audette said the PDAP forms can be picked up at City Hall or on their website. She also said anyone struggling to fill out the form will have an opportunity to speak with a PDAP representative at Melfort City Hall between noon and 8 p.m on Tuesday, Aug. 25.
