Racing sensation coming to Prince Albert

May 17, 2015 | 9:02 AM

A fan favourite on the blacktop is making a stop in Prince Albert.

Shantel Firth was voted fan favourite last year at Saskatoon’s Auto Clearing Motor Speedway.

Firth and her father, Ben Busch, will be at Prince Albert Brewing Company on May 21, signing autographs and posing for pictures with their racing vehicles.

Busch has been racing for over 20 years, and got his start in Prince Albert.

Although Firth has only been racing since 2011, her childhood revolved around cars.

“We were just little kids, always at the track. We would get in the vehicle Friday night and we would drive down to Alberta, come back on Sunday and go to school,” said Firth.

Firth said her passion for the sport comes from the adrenaline and also being surrounded by her family.

“My dad is my crew chief, my mom works in the pits with us, and my dad and I do all the work in the shop.”

Firth had a great season in 2013. She finished fourth in overall points, the highest among all the female racers.  She has more than proven herself in a sport that has been traditionally defined as a man’s sport.

“For myself there is definitely that push to stick it to the boys and say I can do it,” she said. “You see all the little girls that come up to you after the race and they’re like ‘I wanna be like you.’  It’s pretty cool and you hope you do make a change and do reflect on someone’s life.”

Firth’s 2015 season starts on her 25th birthday, May 23.

Firth and her father will be at the Prince Albert Brewing Company on Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event is being sponsored by PA Autobody, Northern Lights Casino, and Cornerstone Insurance.

The event is free to attend.
