PHOTOS: Athletes of all levels take on Summit Run

Some came for fun, some training for other races, and others came to win.

Cordell Klarenbach took on the half-marathon at Prince Albert’s 10th annual Summit run.

No stranger to success, he won the race two years ago and on Saturday he repeated that.

“I just paced myself and waited until after the hill to kind of open up a little bit,” Klarenbach said. “I feel good. It’s always good to win.”He explained that the first few races of the year he hasn’t done as much training as the end of summer, so there weren’t any personal records broken on Saturday.

As for his diet before a race like this, “pasta, eat a lot of pasta right before the race but other than that nothing to extreme.”

The run also features a 10, five, and two-kilometre fun run.

When it comes to personal bests, the 10 kilometre female winner Christina Charles surprised herself.

Only a few weeks earlier she ran her fastest 10K in Saskatoon, with a time of 38:04.

“So I came here today, I wasn’t sure what to expect but I was really surprised that I got another PB (personal best) so quickly after my last one,” Charles said.

“I feel ecstatic. I was really happy about it,” she said, especially since she knew there was some pretty stiff competition in the second place runner Brittany Elliott.

There was also a bit of competition with the wind on the way back, but overall she said the weather cooperated with the runners.

Charles is preparing for the Subaru triathlon and recognized beforehand she didn’t have enough recovery time between now and then to run the half marathon on Saturday.

However, in past years she ran in and won the Summit half marathon.

She pointed out a few differences between the 10 kilometre and the 21 kilometre half marathon.

“You gotta be quick, there’s no time to slack off or get into the groove of it,” she said.

Charles added, she didn’t have much rest leading into Saturday, with exams and some intensive running over the past week.

“I actually kind of didn’t feel 100 per cent up for this but I was like, you go in there and do the best you can and I guess I was more ready for it than I thought,” she said.
