Charge laid after eight people smuggled across Sask border

An arrest warrant is now out for a man from Quebec after he allegedly smuggled eight people in the United States via a quiet Saskatchewan border crossing.

RCMP from the Carnduff detachment and the province's Integrated Border Enforcement Team (IBET) have laid one charge so far against Jose Maria Gonzales-Vasquez, 46, of Montreal. He's being accused of conspiring to commit an indictable offence.

RCMP say it stems from an incident back in early April. Gonzales-Vasquez allegedly helped smuggle five adults and three children from Quebec through the U.S. border crossing at Carievale in south Saskatchewan and into North Dakota. The eight people apparently entered America just after midnight on April 5; they were apprehended shortly after and were “dealt with according to law in the U.S.,” according to an RCMP news release.

Carnduff Mounties, the IBET, U.S. Border Patrol, and U.S. Homeland Security looked into the case, turning up a “smuggler for hire” operation running out of Montreal.
