UPDATED: Hunting accident sends Little Red River man to hospital

Sep 27, 2013 | 5:44 PM

No one's hand was on the trigger, but a man is in Prince Albert's Victoria Hospital with a gunshot wound.

He was out with three other men on Little Red River First Nation, about 50 kilometres north of the city on Friday afternoon.

They had hunting gear and were riding quads when a .22-calibre rifle discharged into the man's torso. A .22-calibre is a light firearm for hunting.

The emergency was phoned in by the group of men, all in their 20s and from the First Nation, at 1:42 p.m.

Preliminary investigation indicates the quads were in motion when the incident happened, according to Operations NCO Sgt. Alain Rabut with Prince Albert RCMP.

It was not intentional, he said.

“One firearm was apparently or appears to have been accidentally discharged, striking one of the other members in their group.”

Officers from PA and Sturgeon Lake were called out to the emergency, along with paramedics.

The 27-year-old man has since been transported to St. Paul's Hospital in Saskatoon in serious but stable condition.

The RCMP is currently looking into what caused the rifle to go off.
