Ryan Meili kicks off NDP leadership campaign

A familiar face is running for leadership of the provincial New Democratic Party.

“I'm Ryan Meili and I'm running to be leader of the New Democratic Party of Saskatchewan,” said newly announced candidate Ryan Meili to a room packed with supporters in the basement of the Two Twenty in the city's west end.

Meili, who recently wrote and released a book on health called A Healthy Society: How A Focus on Health Can Revive Canadian Democracy, spoke about taking an in-depth look into the party.

“I believe that we're more successful when we remember that we're all in this together,” he said. “There's no one of us, that could do this entirely on their own.”

Branding his campaign, “Better Together” Meili said it was important for the party to have a goal rather than have “four different people running off in their own direction.”

During his speech, Meili also also talked about to his clinical work, which he said is the main reason he decided to put his name on the ballot.

“It's not enough to simply treat the symptoms of our political failure, we owe it to the people of Saskatchewan to do better,” he said.

Meili said he wants to use that inspiration to change the way government works, making it more in-tuned with society.

“We need to view our political decisions through a different lens,” he said. “We need to put the health of society, the well being of people, at the forefront of how we make decisions.”

Meili is hoping to build on the momentum of his campaign from the 2009 provincial leadership election, when he came in second to Dwain Lingenfelter.
