Vermette retains seat

Nov 8, 2011 | 5:35 AM

The polls have been counted and New Democrat Doyle Vermette has maintained control of the Cumberland constituency.

It was rumoured that this was one of the ridings to watch. In the 2008 by-election Vermette took the seat of Joan Beatty who stepped down from the position to run federally, but it was not an easy win for Vermette, which made this election particularly interesting.

Vermette took an early lead and did not give it up, winning more than 63% of the vote.

“I feel pretty humbled and honoured to serve the Cumberland constituency for another four years,” he said, as cheers were heard in the background, celebrating his victory.

“If it were a report card I guess I got an ‘A’ from the people and I will continue to work hard for them.”

He said he will serve Northern people to the best of his abilities, making sure they have a strong voice. He said that he has listened to them for the past three years and will continue to address their issues.

The Saskatchewan Party candidate, Joe Hordyski, put up a valiant fight.

“Overall I look at the results across the province and I’m very happy … our leader did a great job. He ran a great campaign … I would have loved to have been a part of that team but, unfortunately, that didn’t turn out for me,” Hordyski said.

He said the only thing he would have done differently would be to create a bigger team in some of the communities, but said he has high hopes for 2015.

When asked about his future plans he jokes that he has a job to go back as a building contractor. He went on to say that if any opportunities in the party were to come along he would consider along he would consider them.

“I’ll certainly entertain those. I’ll get an analysis from the party as to whether I’m part of the future or not,” Hordyski said.

Samuel Hardlotte, Green Party candidate, in Cumberland walked away with three per cent of the vote.
