Gordon Tootoosis coming to Prince Albert

A celebrity from Saskatchewan is returning to his home province to support an event in Prince Albert.

“We just found out recently that our wonderful MC, our Master of Ceremonies, is going to be Gordon Tootoosis, so that is really exciting for us,” said Anita Opoonechaw, one of the organizers with the National Aboriginal Addictions Awareness week fashion show.

This is the second annual event that promotes positive choices and healthy lifestyles, said Opoonechaw.

Tootoosis, who was in Legends of the Fall with Brad Pitt, but is best known for his role in North of 60, is a good fit to be the MC, she said.

“It’s interesting to have Gordon Tootoosis attend our event because he is really someone who is made some really positive choices in his life, in terms of the arts and his creativity and of course his acting and really is someone youth can look at and say, ‘it can be done.’”

The fashion show will feature about 40 youth from across the country, including Saskatchewan, Manitoba and as far away as Labrador. These kids have been designing and making the clothes they will model during the show.

Everything from the modern to traditional powwow will be on display, said Opoonechaw.
It’s more than just a good time for the models though, Opoonechaw describes the event as free and family oriented.

“So we’re inviting everyone and anyone to come down, have some supper, enjoy wonderful entertainment, maybe get to visit with Gordon Tootoosis, as well as see all the wonderful creations that the youth have made,” she said.

The event begins at 6 p.m. at Senator Allan Bird Memorial Gymnasium on Nov. 19.
