Child dies after apartment fire in Saskatoon

A fire in a southwest Saskatoon apartment building has claimed the life of a little girl.

The three-year-old was rescued from a burning suite on the 500-block of Avenue X South around 9 p.m. Wednesday.

“When crews arrived, they found the apartment with heavy smoke and heavy heat,” battalion chief Mike Volk told News Talk Radio late Wednesday. “They did an initial search … They were able to locate the girl in a fairly short time and removed her.”

Sadly, the child died in hospital from cardiac arrest.

Volk admitted that his crews are taking it hard.

“When it's kids like that, it's tough,” he said, adding that grief counsellors are helping firefighters cope with the child's death.

Volk said someone was in the suite with the child, but he can't say more than that.

At this point, there's no word on the cause of the fire, although Volk noted investigators have a pretty good idea of what might have started it.
