Predators split weekend with Wolverines, suffer first loss in over three years

May 12, 2026 | 2:10 PM

A record long winning streak for the Prince Albert Predators has come to an end.

The Predators hadn’t lost a game in over three years, dating back to May 7, 2023, when they last lost 10-6 at the hands of Swift Current. That same Wolverines team were the ones to end P.A.’s lengthy winning streak on Saturday – 1,099 days later – when they edged the Preds 8-7 in Shellbrook.

Since their last loss, the Predators posted a record of 42-0-2 (W-L-T), which includes three provincial championships, two MacDonald Cups (Western Canadian Championships), and a plethora of regular season games in the Prairie Gold Lacrosse League (PGLL).

Head coach Lucas Wells said that his team came out of the gates “lazy” and “flat” in Shellbrook, and they paid the price for it.

“I was very disappointed in how we played the first game in Shellbrook. But those days are going to happen,” he said. “The first period we did not play very well. Second and third, I thought we kind of slowly found our groove and kind of dominated the pace of play. But their goalie, we just couldn’t figure him out.”

Swift Current netminder Kai Foster stole the show in Shellbrook, who stopped a whopping 63 of the 70 shots he faced from the Predators. That led to Rhone Foster potting the game winning goal for the Wolverines, scoring with just one second left in the third for his only point in the contest.

Meanwhile, P.A.’s Braden Shewchuk and Ryley Prediger led the game in scoring with five points each, as Chayse Schafer led Swift Current with four.

Having not lost a game in three years, Wells said that it was the first one for some of the players in their junior lacrosse careers, adding that losing feeling gave them a different mindset for their second game.

“The mentality then shifted when we got back to P.A. and back into the Kinsman and it was similar to an F-U mentality where we are going to do whatever we want to do and you are going to just accept the fate. We won every loose ball, we were more physical, we controlled the pace of play, we doubled them up in shots again. All in all, as a group, I think we kind of needed that [loss], especially earlier in the year to understand that we’re not invincible, and looking back, I think the loss was a good thing.”

Saturday’s loss was short lived as P.A. and Swift Current rematched later that same evening at the Kinsmen Arena, where the Preds were back to the winning ways with a 15-4 beating. Chase Lehner led the way with four goals and two assists, while Logan Rieger had a hat-trick of his own.

Following the weekend, Prince Albert is now 2-1-0 on the year and now have some time off before their next contest on May 23 when they host the Moose Jaw Mustangs at the Kinsmen Arena for a 7 p.m. faceoff. That night will also be when the team raises their provincial and MacDonald Cup banners from last season.

Wells said the next 11 days will be for recovery and practice, as some familiar faces prepare to return to the lineup.

Outlaws walloped by Winnipeg

The Prince Albert Outlaws fell to 0-2-0 on the year after their first, and only, game against the Winnipeg Blizzard this season.

The Blizz made the trek to Northern Saskatchewan over the weekend as part of a three-in-three, which featured two games against the Brewers in Saskatoon and one against P.A. in Shellbrook. Winnipeg dropped the first two games of their weekend and were dialled in for their matchup on Sunday against the Outlaws, where they won 19-6

Talon Sandry had a goal and two assists for P.A. as Brody Holizki and Kurtis Peifer both finished with two points each. Ethan Bahniuk led the way for Winnipeg with seven points, followed by Mike Newman and Carter Ullett each with five.

The Outlaws return to action on May 29 when they host the Moose Jaw Mafia at Kinsmen Arena. Opening faceoff is set for 9:15 p.m.
