Regina professor worries for family in Libya
A University of Regina professor is fearful for his family’s safety in tumultuous Libya. Dr. Ezeddin Shirif teaches Petroleum Engineering and has called Canada home for over 20 years. He says he left behind his parents and 10 siblings to make a better life for his children. But with the violence erupting in Libya, he is very concerned, not only for his family, but for all the people of Libya.
He says the country is in complete chaos right now as leader Moammar Gadhafi continues to kill protesters in hopes of hanging on to his power. Dr. Shirif spoke with his family in Libya and is worried about the things they have witnessed.
“They saw two kids, 11-years-old, they were crossing the street at the traffic light- and they were shot,” Shirif told News Talk Radio. He claims the regime is taking the dead bodies of protesters and hiding them, going so far to even dump them in the sea.
Shirif says he's hopeful the sanctions from the international community, including Canada, will finally put an end to the brutal reign of Gadhafi. Dr. Shirif was only a 13-year-old boy when the dictator began to rule with an iron fist over Libya, but he remembers the fear that people began to live with.
