Sask. MP sees her bill on First Nations transparency go to vote

Saskatoon-Rosetown-Biggar MP Kelly Block could see her bill for transparency on Canadian First Nations move on if a vote is successful Wednesday.

Block is calling for the House of Commons to support Bill C-575 by voting to move it to committee. It would require chiefs and band councillors across the country to reveal their salaries.

“These financial statements are already sent in to INAC, and we're simply asking for them to be made public,” said Block. Block adds it's not fair that people living on reserves are often denied the ability to know what their leaders are doing with band money. “Some get the information, some don't, and some have to then go through the process of an access to information request,” said Block.

Block has heard strong opposition from members of both the federal NDP and the Liberal parties when it comes to Bill C-575. “They will talk about the extra burden of reporting that this will put on First Nations.”
