Greening up the grid, priority for Green candidate

Myk Brazier is trying to get Prince Albert a little bit greener.

“What I want to focus on and what the Green Party is focusing on is greening up the grid with renewable energy, decentralizing that grid as well and make it a little more efficient and that, as sort of an alternative to nuclear power which I personally think is a dead end option,” said the 27-year-old while citing issues Japan is facing with nuclear power.

Brazier is the Green Party candidate for the upcoming federal election.
While he is born and raised in the area, Brazier is new to the political scene.

He only joined the Green Party about three weeks ago after attending a meeting about nuclear power.

“People are putting so much blood sweat and tears into the land and settling down here, where I grew up, I just want to make sure that I just give people that option. That’s why I am running, so people have the option to vote Green Party, if they want to,” he said.

Brazier has some localized ideas for this constituency.

“Diversified local food economy, encouraging the community to grow as much food, and trade as much food as you possibly can. Just so we not only have more abundance for ourselves, but so we don’t have to transport food from other places,” he said, explaining these are the types of things he is working on at his farm near Choiceland.

He is using greenhouses to try and expand the growing season and even looking at underground greenhouses, or earth sheltering, to try and use less heat for the greenhouses.

While Brazier admits he is young to be running in the election, he said he hopes to be able to connect with young people. He said he wants to be involved and is interested in what people have to say.

He is out talking with people, but a lack of funds is keeping him a little closer to home.

“Right now we are on a bit of a shoestring budget, but we are going to try and stretch that shoestring as far as she’ll go,” he said.

He is still collecting signatures of support as per Elections Canada requirements to run in the election.
